Walter Schmetzer, the founder of Schmetzer's Sporthaus and German Third-Division professional player, immigrated to the Northwestern United States and began the long process of teaching his three sons the "beautiful" game. Years of dedication to the sport resulted in a very successful youth coaching career mentoring hundreds of children including his sons.
The oldest son, Brian, was a high school star and later played for the Seattle Sounders. He also won three championships with the San Diego Sockers of the Major Indoor Soccer League (MISL). As head coach, he led the USL Sounders to two National Championships in 2005 and 2007 and is now currently the assistant coach for the Seattle Sounders FC of the MLS. Twin sons, Andy and Walter Jr also starred at Nathan Hale High School leading the team to a Washington State Title in 1985. Both brothers had professional soccer careers in the Western Soccer Alliance and the MISL.
